Atmospheres

Atmospheres by Peter Zumthor was the first reading assignment for class. This was a easy reading from a passionate architects perspective. His descriptions were vivid and compelling as he spoke about the "anatomy" of architecture.

A few of my favorite quotes from Peter Zumthor's book:

"We perceive atmosphere through our emotional sensibility..."
"People interact with objects"
"Architecture, like music, is a temporal art"

He made me think about components of a building in a way that I had not considered before. For example: sound, temperature, and the tension between the interior and exterior.

His reading raised the following questions that I had for my professor:
1. Do you have an example of designing with light based on using pure mass of shadows and then hallowing out the light?
2. Is there a good local example of intimacy, as it pertains to Zumthor's analysis?
3. What is your experience with coherence?
